Former Interior Minister assistant Gísli Freyr Valdórsson has reached a settlement with Evelyn Glory Joseph, who was named in the memo he leaked to the press in November 2014. Nigerian asylum seeker Tony Omos is also seeking damages in the Leak Case, though his case has been postponed until next week.
RÚV reports that Katrín Oddsdóttir, Evelyn’s attorney, would not disclose how much the settlement was, but that “it is an amount both sides can be happy with”. She added that her client wants to be left alone to rebuild her life.
Tony Omos, in the meantime, is also seeking damages for the Leak Case. Stefán Karl Kristjánsson, Tony’s lawyer, said that the case has been postponed until the following week, to give time for a settlement to be made. Tony is seeking 5 million ISK in damages.
Evelyn originally sought 4.5 million ISK in damages for violation of privacy in the wake of a memo leaked to the press in November 2013, which named her and levelled accusations that she has categorically denied, such as lying about Tony Omos being the father of her child. It came to light that the memo originated in the Ministry of the Interior and, last November, Gísli Freyr confessed to having created the memo himself.
Shortly thereafter, Minister of the Interior Hanna Birna Kristjánsdóttir resigned from her post. Gísli was sentenced to an eight-month probationary sentence.
