Landmannalaugar: Take Yourself Into Iceland’s Highlands
Iceland On Your Own: Landmannalaugar
A stopover in Iceland has three components: The Golden Circle, The South Coast and a night out on Laugavegur. But what if there was another Laugavegur? A Laugavegur that wasn’t full of tourists and teenagers stuffing their faces with Dunkin’ Donuts, but instead donned some of the most stunning scenery in Iceland? Obviously, there is. Laugavegur is also the name of a 55 KM hiking trail and its northern point starts next to Landmannalaugar, a place that can be described as otherworldly. The surrounding volcanoes get their colour from sulphur, iron, moss, lava and ash, making them the most colourful in all of Iceland. You can camp for a couple of days and do day hikes into the martian-like surroundings or use it as a starting point for your Laugavegur hike. It’s also a great place for Arctic Char fishing. It’s up to you what you want to do when you get there, but you’ll always feel like you could have done more.
We were lucky enough to get a ride out there with Reykjavík Excursions on their Iceland On Your Own bus. Take a look at these pictures and tell us you don’t want to be here.
