From Iceland — You Might Not Know Oliver, But He’s Throwing You A Party

You might not know it, but he threw one of Reykjavík’s top parties of 2014, too

Icelanders hang with their families on New Years Eve. At least until midnight. You can’t convince them to do otherwise. Just ask Oliver Luckett, who flew over from Los Angeles to throw a massive party for Icelanders and their friends on New Years Day (featuring a lavish meal (either sushi or Icelandic wild game), unlimited booze (!) and top house DJs Wonkers). Oliver’s idea was initially to get things going on New Years Eve, but, as he quickly learned, Icelanders are set in their habits.

So he moved it to the next day.

And it promises to be no less of a spectacle.

He wrote us (you) a letter about it:

“Here’s the idea of the party that we are throwing: The birthday party that my boyfriend, Scott Guinn, threw for me in July was such a great success [this is by many considered one of the parties of summer 2014, as referenced above] that we wanted to create somewhat of a tradition out of it, except we wanted to do it during wintertime—we really prefer visiting in the winter. This will be our third New Years Eve in Reykjavík, and our eighth trip to Iceland in three and a half years. We’ve really fallen in love with the people of Iceland; we especially love the humanistic culture and its expression in arts, music, and even politics, like the Best Party. I do think the rest of the world has a lot to learn from Iceland.

So, this year, we tried to plan the party for New Years Eve, but we quickly learned that it’s really a time for families to come together. We thus moved the dinner and celebration to New Years Day, January 1. We’re calling it Northern Lites, and it will be a blast.

The party starts off with two different, all you can eat, family-style dinners at the Sushi Bar or Cabin Restaurant, the former offering sushi, the latter procuring delicious local wild game. Then, we move to Lavabarinn, where I have brought in my favourite new house DJs: Wonkers from Berlin (I discovered them on Soundcloud a few months ago, and got rather obsessed). I’m sure there will be special guests as well.

I’ve also invited friends that could not make the birthday party, so there will be familiar and new faces. About twenty foreigners will be visiting me, and lots of locals. Everyone is invited. In addition, the crowd will be comprised of artist friends, university students, and entrepreneurs that we have had the honour to get to know over the years. I feel like bringing together so many diverse people with similar values is my gift back to your amazing country.
