A totally plausible and not at all trolling conspiracy theory puts forward that Netflix is deliberately trying to influence Eurovision to ensure an Iceland win in order to promote their Will Ferrell comedy, ‘Eurovision’, wherein the actor plays an Icelandic contestant.

The conspiracy, posted on Twitter with the claim that “someone at Netflix leaked this”, has a timeline that goes back to 2014.

It contends that Rob Holley is not a real person but a fake account deliberately created with the sole purpose of reporting on Eurovision. Six years later, the account then tweeted the video to Daði Freyr’s ‘Think About Things’, and somehow convinced several celebrities to retweet it.

The conspiracy goes on to state that Daði Freyr won the Icelandic finals through a “sympathy vote”. Looking into the future, it predicts that Greta Thunberg will reference the song in a speech about climate change, “performing the dance on stage with Angela Merkel and Jimmy Carter”, and that Meghan and Harry will name their child “Dadi”.

Finally, in May 2020, Iceland will win the Eurovision Song Contest, and therefore boost promotion for Netflix’s ‘Eurovision’.

In response, Netflix UK & Ireland all but confirmed the conspiracy by stating: “We will not comment on rumour or speculation.”

Whether or not the conspiracy bears out to be true remains to be seen.
