13 Days Of Grapemas: Potato Day

Published December 26, 2018

In Iceland, Christmas is a little wacky. Instead of one Santa, we have thirteen. And rather than being a jolly old white-bearded fellow who lets children sit on his on his lap in a shopping mall and showers them with presents, our Jólasveinar—or “Yule Lads,” in English—are a tribe of mischievous little weirdos.

Starting on December 12th, the Yule Lads came down from the mountains one by one, each day until Christmas. If kids behaved well, they put a gift in their shoes; if not, they got a potato.

In honour of this tradition, we gave away a prize every day running up to Christmas. But now? It’s potato time.

What’s In The Shoe Today?

Seeing as you’ve been nominating all the good kids you know for the last 13 days, we thought you might like the chance to nominate a mischievous kid, too (tag them on this Facebook status to do so).

Has your roomie been leaving a sink full of dishes? Your girlfriend stealing your favourite socks? Your drummer stinking up the tour bus? Your President been colluding with Russia? Tag your potato nominee here, telling us why they have been naughty, and the most ill-behaved of all will receive, as a gift from us at Grapevine, an authentic and genuine Icelandic potato.

Gleðileg Jól! Get tagging!
