A group of female journalists released a statement pointing out that there are no women in the top positions of Iceland’s media, and that more women are needed in journalism’s ranks.
The Society of Journalist Women met yesterday, where a discussion was held and a resolution drawn up. Apart from the criticism of the lack of women in management positions, the statement also decried the massive laying off of journalists that has taken place over the past few months.
Morgunblaðið laid off some 40 journalists last fall when it hired Davíð Oddsson as co-editor, and RÚV also fired a number of journalists last month. Both moves have been roundly criticized by journalist unions at home and abroad as damaging to freedom of the press.
