A website that will offer Icelandic movies and television shows online is set to open this Monday. A press release from the organisers of the site explains the concept:
“A new website, Icelandic Cinema Online, will be launched on May 23rd, and is the first site that emphasises on the variety of Icelandic films. On the website, one can access Icelandic films, documentaries, short films, tv shows and other audiovisuals from and about Iceland.
“In the past, Icelandic films have been ill-accessible both in Iceland and abroad. Icelandic Cinema Online aims to change this. There will be English subtitles to all the films on the site, and to some films there are German, French, Spanish, Danish subtitles as well. The interface of the site is all in English and therefore easy to use for people outside Iceland.
“The purpose of the site is also to create a platform where Icelandic producers and filmmakers can promote their work through the internet in a much bigger marketplace than has been possible before. In the past few year there has been a great increase in demand for video material on the internet and it is important that Icelandic film producers utilize the opportunities to access fans that is provided by the internet. With faster internet connections and new technology the possibility to stream movies online in good quality has been greatly increased.
“‘It´s very exciting to be able to provide films that has been difficult to come by, such as Icelandic documentaries and short films. The site will be launched with 30 to 40 titles and we intend to add new material every week. We are always working on adding films and subtitles in more languages. Icelandic films in full length are over hundred, not to mention the hundreds of documentaries and short films that have been made here. So there is a lot to take from and there are many entertaining Icelandic movies that have been unavailable for a long time. We´re going to do our best to find these movies and put them online,’ says Sunna Guðnadóttir, the project manager for Icelandic Cinema Online.
“The beta version of the site will be launched on May 23rd, but on the 19th of May, Facebook friends of the site will get a special pre-launch.”
