The Blood Bank has run into an unusually large shortage of blood, and is appealing to the general public for help.
DV spoke with Sigríður Ósk Lárusdóttir, a nurse at the Blood Bank, about the matter.
“[Shortages] always happen at this time of year, but it has been getting harder to get donors,” she explained. Summer time means more accidents, which means more blood is needed. Right now, the Blood Bank especially needs blood types O and A, although all blood types in general are wanted.
Our non-Icelandic-speaking readers can also rest assured that last year’s controversy over people being turned away for not speaking the language – nor being allowed to bring interpreters with them – has been allegedly rectified, by the promise of the head doctor there. So non-Icelandic-speakers are free to donate blood there again.
The Blood Bank is located on Snorrabraut 60 and is open from 11:00 to 19:00 Monday and Thursday, 11:00 to 19:00 on Tuesdays and 8:00 to 15:00 on Wednesdays.
