Baltasar Kormákur continues to draw the attention of the film world with his latest offering, with increased speculation for Oscar material.
Baltasar has been as much attraction for Hollywood as he does for Iceland, telling Grapevine last September that while he’s been thrilled to work in Hollywood with big name actors such as Denzel Washington, “I think that would have been very difficult [to shoot The Deep in Hollywood]. I don’t think we could even have gotten insurance for the production, the way we did it here, and what I had to do myself on the set, shooting scenes while swimming in the ocean a mile off shore to get the right angle for the shot, and taking shore in the cliffs in the surf like we did. You can’t really do that in a Hollywood production.”
His latest effort, The Deep, has been receiving high praise and home and abroad, culminating in the Icelandic Film and TV Academy selecting the film as their submission for a possible 2013 Best Foreign Language Oscar.
Renowned film website Deadline has picked up on the narrative, and believes The Deep is a serious contender for an Oscar.
The 85th Academy Awards will be held on February 24, 2013. If Baltasar’s latest film does not win, perhaps he will have better luck with future endeavours – he happens to own the rights to Halldór Laxnes’ Independent People, the book that earned Iceland its first Nobel Prize for Literature.
