Hopeful parents in Iceland may soon be able to adopt children from Russia, as the two countries move toward finalizing an adoption agreement. Efforts to come to such an agreement have been ongoing for the past three years, RÚV reports.
Russsia’s foreign minister, Sergei Lavrov, has signaled that Russia is prepared to put their stamp of approval on the agreement. A draft of the contract was submitted to Russia on Friday and Russian officials may travel to Iceland in the coming weeks to sign.
The Icelandic Adoption Society (ÍAS) currently facilitates international adoptions of children from China, India, Colombia, Poland, the Czech Republic, and Thailand.
