Ragnhildur Helgadóttir, a professor at the University of Reykjavík and expert on constitutional law, believes that clearer rules are needed regarding the president’s power to veto laws, RÚV reports.
According to Ragnhildur, the constitution states that the President is largely a symbolic power, and should not have any personal power, as he has when vetoing laws.
President Ólafur Ragnar Grímsson was just in the news for denying a petition calling for him to refer the bill on fishing fees to a national referendum. He instead passed the bill, approving of the reduction of fishing fees.
