One company hopes to build the country’s first planetarium, with the aim of creating a mostly underground facility near Perlan.
RÚV reports that the company in question, Perla Norðursins ehf., is already renting Perlan from the City of Reykjavík, who had bought it from the Orkuveita Reykjavíkur power company in December 2012.
“We intend to build the first planetarium in Iceland,” Perla Norðursins director Agnes Gunnarsdóttir told reporters. “We’re working on this in cooperation with Ingimundur Sveinsson, Perlan’s designer. It was an idea from him to build an annex outside. We intend to be there with a planetarium, where we also plan to have high resolution pictures of Icelandic nature shown in 360°.”
The plans are still only in the initial stages, so there is no word yet on when the project will begin, let alone when it will be completed. For now, those hoping to check out the stars while in Iceland would do well to travel outside the city – although not in the summer months, for obvious reasons.
